10 Unique Christmas Tradition Ideas

I LOVE TRADITIONS! They make the best memories and really unify a family. A good Christmas tradition is like a really good inside joke. No one else gets it, but it creates bonds like nothing else. One of our weirdest traditions as a kid was my mom forcing us to clean the house in between presents and stockings, as fast as we possibly could. We loved it and hated it at the same time, but we always laugh looking back on those crazy moments.

This year is going to be our first year with just us. It will really be our Christmas in a whole different way. I decided it was absolutely essential that we came up with some new Christmas traditions that would make our season unique and memorable. I have been thinking for months about what to do and finally have decided on some traditions that will be perfect for our little family. They are unique and fun, and I am hoping they will create some great memories.

I am going to keep the specifics of our traditions a secret until I post about our Christmas morning, but they are hidden within this list of ten unique Christmas tradition ideas I came up with. This list of Christmas tradition ideas is anything BUT the norm, and I think that is what makes them extra special and memorable. These ideas will make your Christmas more wacky, memorable and meaningful. Hope you like them!

10 Unique Christmas Tradition Ideas

1. Cleaning The House After Stockings & Before Presents

Isn’t this idea just the worst ever from a kids perspective, but the BEST from a parents. I have literally never seen kids clean faster than we used to on Christmas morning.

2. Time Capsule Gift For Next Year

Create a family gift to open next year at Christmas, have each person choose something in advance that they think they would like next year and put it in. Wrap it up nicely and put it away with the Christmas decorations in storage.

3. A Birthday Cake For Jesus

My sister in law suggested this idea to me, she said every year her mom would make a huge birthday cake for Jesus and they would sing happy birthday to him and then eat the cake! Such a cute way to remind kids of the true meaning behind Christmas

4. Scavenger Hunt Gift

Make one gift for each of your kids a scavenger hunt. When they open it, they will reveal the first clue. If you want to entertain yourself and drive your kids a little crazy, make the scavenger hunt last as long as possible and hide their best gift!

5. Play Christmas Bingo

Before you open presents give each family member a blank bingo board and have them fill each square with things they think (or hope) they will see as they unwrap presents, candy canes, socks, etc. First one to yell bingo gets a prize!

6. Create A Family Christmas Memory Blanket

Find a blanket that is cotton material and a neutral color and some fabric markers. Every year after Christmas have everyone write their favorite thing about that Christmas on the blanket, it could be a gift, a moment, a song. Make sure each family member signs with their name and age. Over the years your blanket will become a treasure filled with memories.

7. Hide Some Christmas Presents

Similar to the scavenger hunt, hide a few presents. It adds extra excitement and makes the unwrapping experience last a little longer.

8. The Christmas King/Queen

This one is just silly, but my family would be totally into it. Wrap up an identical present for each family member and have one box contain a crown or goofy hat. Each person gets to choose one present, and the family member that ends up with the crown is named King or Queen for the day. You could make it just be the title, or you could add rights like the queen gets to pick out Christmas carols to sing, a Christmas movie to watch and a treat for the family to share later that night.

9. Have A Family Camp-out Under The Tree

Christmas night have a family camp-out under the tree. Grab your sleeping bags, flashlights and a pile of Christmas stories to read. If you have little kiddies you could just make the camp-out last an hour past regular bed time. If you have older kids you could stay under the tree all night!

10. Give A Gift To Jesus

Give each family member a new journal for Christmas. Sometime during the day, when things are quiet, sit down as a family and write in your journal one thing you could give to Christ. For example you could say, “I am going to try harder to be patient with my family.” If you feel like it you could even go around the circle and each share with each other what you are going to give.

Do you have any weird family Christmas traditions?? Let me know in the comments! I would love some more ideas to add to the list.

  1. What great ideas Rachael! In our family, we would spend Christmas Eve at our Italian grandparent’s home in Vancouver with 6 of their children, spouses, and my many cousins. My grandmother made yummy Italian cookies covered with powdered sugar, and other goodies. Everyone drank my grandfather’s homemade wine. The grandhildren drank juice! Ours was a musical family and my Uncle Batista played the mandolin and my Uncle Reno played the guitar. My grandmother loved to sing and we all joined in with Christmas Carols and Italian folk songs. This event went on for years and bonded our family together in a special way. At home, my dad would go to Sea Island to cut down his own tree. In those days you didn’t need a permit to cut a tree.
We would decorate it on Christmas Eve! My mother put up a woollen work sock for my Chrisrmas stocking. There were no commercial stockings when I was young but it held a lot of goodies, mostly Christmas candy, oranges and nuts. There were no TV.s when I was young so we all went outside to play in the snow on Christmas day, making snow angels and having snowball fights.

    Best Wishes, Yvonne🎄🎄🎄😝

  2. This post was a great gift to all of us, one I wish I’d opened sooner since some of your ideas are ones I haven’t thought of before but are really good. Every year we gave our children a new, usually handmade, Christmas ornament with their name written on the back. The theory was, thiese would make a great gift for them when they left home and had their own Christmas tree. It didn’t work quite as well as anticipated since many of the ornaments were destroyed over time (flood, mice, moving etc). But every year, when we cracked open the box of ornaments, there was great joy in reminiscing as each ornament came to light.

Another tradition was setting a simple wooden manger on the hearth at the first of December and telling the kids that every time they did a good deed, whether seen by anyone else or not, they could put a strand of straw in the manger. The goal was to have a cozy bed for the Baby Jesus when he came on Christmas Eve. It added the sweetest spirit of love and giving to our home.

I loved this post and these pictures. I can tell you have a bit of Grandpa’s dickens in you. Hooray.

    1. Awww I love both traditions, but the second one is especially sweet. I would love to do that with Zoey next year… Miss you and grandpa so much!

  3. It’s always fun to have a Christmas traditional food! Like always having grasshopper pie or fruit salad or fingerfood or pancakes for Christmas Eve dinner. A Christmas Day breakfast would be fun too!

  4. My family does a “talent” show on Christmas Eve. Sometimes the talents are the kind you wouldn’t be embarrassed to share at a talent show, but they can also be really silly. Like a song detailing all the goofy things the kids did throughout the year to the tune of “I’m getting nothing for Christmas” or a skit made by a 6 year old. It’s one of my favourite traditions.

  5. These are definitely some fun and unique ideas. We would do what is called the Christmas Pickle. It’s a pickle ornament that is hidden in the tree. All the kids would hunt the tree for the pickle and the one to find it would get a special gift. We loved it! And those who didn’t find it would vowed we would find that pickle next year!
