A Letter To Zoey

Dear Zoey,

I still remember taking 8 pregnancy tests in a row and shaking because I didn’t believe it could be real. I remember the first time I felt you kick, and the way you always kicked more when I played music near my belly. You were a dancer from the start. I’ll never forget being in labor for 34 hours and then seeing you for the first time and immediately thinking I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

You have been dancing since you were about 8 months old, when you dance your joy and zest for life just radiates all over the room. Never stop dancing.

Moments like the first time you crawled up the stairs, ate solid food (a whole asparagus you stole from me at 4 months) and the first time you said mama and I knew you meant me, (you were sitting in the swing at the playground near our Greensburg house), are moments that will never leave me. It has been amazing to watch you grow into a little person with so much creativity and personality. The way you bring up how you never want to grow up and leave us, and then cry because the thought of leaving us makes you so sad, always melts my heart.

You are funny just like your daddy and you know it. I love how you try and make me laugh with the silly things you do and say. I love how you remind me that you and daddy are funny, but I am “not really funny”. Some people might be offended by your ability to make normal words sound like swear words – b***h = edge and s**t = shoot – but I think it is hilarious and adorable. I will just let people guess how you say the phrase ‘suck my thumb’.😳 Which reminds me, I love the way you suck your thumb when you are tired and that you always announce to us in the car, “I tired, I going to f*** my fum and take a little nap! Wake me up when we get there!!!”. Also I love how you tell us you can’t talk to us right now because you are sucking your thumb.

I love the way you adore all creatures. Every fly, dog, spider, robin, squirrel and duck is your ‘best friend’. You especially love bugs lately. You are the only person I know who can have a one sided conversation with an ant for an hour. And the way you told that pill bug yesterday that you ‘just can’t believe you found another rolly polly bug’ with such awe and gentleness and love…. If you can love a bug that much, there is no limit to your love.

I am always amazed by your bravery and confidence. You go on rides that would make me cry when I was twice your age and say it is “pretend scary, but fun!” and then you go again. Performing your own made up dances and songs in front of a group of people is something you are proud to do (most the time). As someone who loves performing, but battles fear and ‘stage fright’ all the time, it makes me SO happy to see that you aren’t afraid to do the things you love, no matter who is watchingI hope you never lose that. I hope you are never afraid to shine. And I hope you always remember that you don’t have to be the best, the most talented, the smartest or the most beautiful (even though I think you are all of those things). You just need to keep doing the things you love and the things that make you happy, and never worry about what people think. Don’t ever be afraid to be different. You are smart, funny, beautiful, creative, mischievous, friendly, loving, thoughtful, unique and so many more amazing things.

These past 3 years and 9 months with you have been the best of my life and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for you. There is a quote by Elizabeth Stone that says, “Making the decision to have a child – it is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. ” There couldn’t be a better way to describe how I feel about you. I love you my Zoey girl.

Love,

Mommy

  1. That gets my heart! I love this blog so much. Zoey’s the cutest lli girl ever…i love her too!!

  2. Wow, it’s kinda crazy to me how much she sounds like our Zoey (turned 3 in May)! She is non-stop dancing all the time and does the same thing with animals thinking they all want to be her friend haha! Just today she had an entire conversation with the steam mop saying he was her best friend! Your little Zoey is gorgeous and sounds just precious!

  3. Awe so very sweet and hilariously funny because of the perfect innocence. Oh Rachael we felt/feel everyone of these feelings towards you. Our life has been so blessed by the sparkle of heaven that you brought trailing with you into our family.

  4. I loved this!!! It reminded me of all the sweet little moment in each of my girls lives that makes being a mother so special. Today I was talking to some kids about ‘doing your duty’ and it sounded sooo boring. Then I talked about how fun it is being a wife and mother and how ‘doing my duty’ is to have fun, take picture, go on dates and do whatever it takes to make my family work. My duty here is the best thing I could ever do!!!

I love the living room. I love your pictures wall!!! Can you do a post on how you do did that?
