5 Small Steps to be more Healthy

Does it ever just hit you how every small action related to your health is having an effect on your future? Kris thinks about it all the time when he sees people in the hospital. Many of them are dealing with horrible health issues as a direct result of living an unhealthy lifestyle when they were young. This is a quick motivation to be more healthy and he is so good at living a healthy lifestyle as a result. But it is easy for me to forget how the simple things, like what I eat and what I put on my body, could be harming me in the long run. Sometimes I just think it doesn’t matter much, I want to enjoy my life and minimize worry. But this week I had a huge mindset change and made some big and small changes related to my health. To start, I switched to Tom’s of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant. It might surprise you to know that these choices had a lot more to do with parenting than anything else. Let me explain.

Something hit me the other night as I was eating a delicious sub sandwich, stuffed with cheese and processed meats. It was so good, but so unhealthy, and I knew it! I realized that the choice to eat unhealthy food doesn’t only affect me, it also affects my family. It also hit me a few weeks ago when I was putting on deodorant. Whether or not certain ingredients in conventional deodorant are safe, like parabens and aluminum, is still unclear. Scientists say that there is more research needed in this area. Yet many of us (like me) keeping using questionable personal care products without a definitive answer on whether or not they are harmful.

As I was looking at my deodorant and my sandwich, and then at my babies and my sweet husband, it hit me how impactful the small decisions can be. When you have a family, your health isn’t just your business. You have a duty to the ones you love to protect yourself. You need to be more healthy for them. They need you! I realized that I want nothing but the best for me and my family. And that by choosing the best, I am showing love for my children.

With these thoughts I knew I wanted to make some changes in my life to be more healthy. It is hard to change all at once… So that is why I am starting with some baby steps. I really think these will pay off in the long run.

5 Small Steps to be more Healthy

1. When you get a craving, eat a fruit or veggie first.

Changing your diet all at once can be really hard. But a good diet is a huge way to be more healthy. Chocolate is my weakness. Rather than saying I can’t eat any chocolate, I have made a goal to eat a fruit or vegetable first, when I crave something sweet. Often eating an apple or carrot will curb my sweet craving, but even if it doesn’t, at least I gave my body something healthy!

2. Switch your deodorant.

This week I partnered with Tom’s of Maine deodorant, it inspired me to head to the store and buy some of their newest scents. Switching was such simple thing to do, and it makes me feel good knowing I am using a product that is totally safe for my body. There are no questionable ingredients in Tom’s of Maine! Just good. Natural personal care products can take a little bit of time to get used to, so it’s important to give your body time to adjust. If your body is used to a conventional product, you might need a little time to get used to a natural formula, free of chemicals and artificial ingredients.

3. Go on a daily walk.

Exercise is hard for me. I always feel too busy. But going out on a walk outside in nature, every day, is something everyone has time for. Even if it is just ten minutes to get your blood flowing and breath some fresh air, it feels so good. My kids love going outside and now that Zander can walk it is even more exciting to explore together. This is a simple way to be more healthy everyday.

4. Carry a water bottle around with you!

Another of my goals to be more healthy is to carry around a water bottle with me so it is easy to always stay hydrated on the go. I feel more energetic in general when I do this! If you are a busy mama like me, chances are you forget to drink water sometimes. I always notice when my lips start getting chapped that I need to be drinking more. Water is so important to your health.

5. Read the ingredients before you buy something.

When you are picking something up to put in your cart, stop and read the ingredients first. Whether it is a beauty product or food, don’t hesitate to do some research on ingredients that look unfamiliar to you. This may seem like a lot of work at first, but eventually you will get a good list of products you feel comfortable buying, using and sharing with your family. Start by just choosing one thing to analyze each time you shop, and go from there.

  1. Your tip of eating a healthy fruit or vegetable before having a less healthy treat is worth its weight in gold. Just that one thing can impact our health for the better. I wish I’d been as smart as you when I was your age.

    1. I’m so glad you are making these healthy choices! Tom’s is a good brand, I’ve used it before. Right now I’m using a crystal, with no fragrance, as more people are getting allergic to fragrances. I like your idea of having some fruit first, when getting a chocolate craving.
