5 Ways to Prepare for The Voice Callback Auditions

Hey there. My name is Rachael and I’m an Instagram singer (yes I made up that title for myself…). Anyways, I have made it through to The Voice Callback auditions a few times and I always felt like I had no idea what to expect going into these auditions. So for those of you who have made it through, CONGRATULATIONS!! here are a few tips that will help you get ready for the big day. Hope they help!! I also shared in depth details in a video on my YouTube channel HERE. If you want details about what the The Voice Callback Auditions are like from start to finish, head over there. PS these tips are great if you are auditioning for the X Factor or American Idol too.

Prepare 2-3 Songs

Don’t just prepare one song. If they like your first song enough to send you through to the next round, they will ask to hear a second song. You need to impress them with TWO songs in order to make it through to the next round. If you need some ideas check out this post with 100 different audition song ideas for every voice type.

Choose A Song That Shows Of Your Voice FAST

Preferably choose a song that shows off your voice in 15 seconds or less. First impressions are everything in auditions, especially The Voice Callback Auditions. So many people audition, show the judges why YOU are better than the competition as fast as you can.

Practice A Lot

To get your voice top notch sing at least 5-6 days a week for at least half hour. The old mantra, ‘practice makes perfect’ is true. If you are really serious about getting on The Voice (or X Factor or American Idol) then make practicing a priority.

Record Yourself

Record yourself singing, listen to and watch it carefully. Find where to improve. If there is somewhere specific that you keep making a mistake, try singing that one small portion over and over. In general if you can sing something ten times in a row without making a mistake that means you are totally ready to perform it.

Be Confident

Confidence in yourself shows through and actually inspires others to believe in you. The judges know you are human and that humans make mistakes. If you mess up just keep singing!

Have YOU auditioned for The Voice (or X Factor or American Idol) Callbacks before? What helped you prepare for the audition?? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Are the callback auditions held in the same place as the open call auditions? I’m coming from out of town and don’t know when to book my ticket back home. I’m scared to book it too early. Thank you!

  2. Hi, thank you for this valuable article. I am hoping you can answer a quesiton for me. Last year my neice got through the first round and went on to another audition the next day in the same city. She didn’t make it that time but she is trying again. If she gets through that round (we are heading to Atlanta this summer for the auditions there.) what is the time line? For the 3rd audition is it on to California or is that even more auditions away? Any insight is appreciated.

  3. Hey, I’m heading down to an upcoming SF Audition for The Voice from the Portland Area. I’m trying to figure out how long my plane ticket should be for, and knowing when the callbacks are usually scheduled (hopefully next-day, but don’t want to assume) would be of great help. Thanks for taking the time to offer such insight, I will be watching your vid, and applying your experience to further instill the confidence and emotional poise I need to truly fire on all artistic cylinders. Also, just have to mention, you have such beautiful and joyous family, spirit can be so hard to convey sometimes, but you display it beyond par like a true empathetic professional, just had to say so! Thanks again!

  5. O and instead of having somebody play something for you,can you get a kareoke song off of youtube? Thanks 🙂

  6. Hi, can you sing one of the songs that you sang at your open call audition to the callback audition? I cant find this anywhere and i really hope you can help thanks! My audition is in 3 days, thanks for your help 🙂

    1. Sorry I missed your comment and I hope your audition went really well. I will answer in case anyone reading has the same question! You can use the same song for both auditions.

  7. Rachel, I loved your tips on finding confidence in yourself, I will definitely be using these :).. However, I would edit this article. You should not tell people to sing 30mins – 1 hour a day for 5-6 days a week. I understand the need to practice but if they have not sang before, this could be very damaging to their vocal cords.. People need to ease into singing that much, a lot of singing experts recommend 15-20 mins sessions maybe 2-3 times a day, and having an on/off schedule. for instance sing for 2 days, don’t sing for 1 day, sing for 2 don’t sing for 1 and so on. Again thanks for the encouragement and advise! 🙂

  8. Question. Do they let you know you will be getting a call back when your audition is done? I see call backs are 1-3 days. How could people afford to stay in a town that they traveled hours to waiting on a maybe. Thanks. John

    1. I think they either tell you right away or say that they will call you in the next 24 hours and if you haven’t heard than it is a no. It can get expensive to have to do it all on your own dime! I have spent A LOT of $$$ on trips to New York…
