Rosie’s First Day

Scroll down a bit for answers to all the questions everyone has been asking us since we brought our puppy home. The questions include where we got her, how potty training has been, what she has been like with the kids and so much more. First though, I wanted to share the story of how we ended up with a puppy, since it was COMPLETELY unexpected and unplanned.

Exactly one week ago today we hopped in the car to go to the mall, with absolutely no idea that are family was going to come home completely changed. We had talked about getting a puppy a lot in the past, but decided it wasn’t the time. When we got to the mall Zoey had to say hi to the puppies. I was secretly hoping that one particular puppy that we had seen last week would still be there so we could say hello.

When we got to the pet store we found the tiny pup still waiting there in the window. She looked sad and we asked if we could hold her. Zoey loves holding the puppies, so this is something we have done before, with absolutely no intention of buying one. I don’t ask to hold the puppies too often, since it is so difficult for Zoey to say goodbye. But today I felt compelled to hold the puppy that had stood out to me a week before.

As soon as they put this little pup in my arms I had this feeling she was supposed to be ours. I was surprised because I adopting her had not even crossed my mind before. She was so sweet and small and helpless – and cuddly!!! Zoey cried at the thought of leaving her and begged us to take her home. Kris said we should think about it, and then he held her and fell in love too.

So we came home with a puppy in our hearts and in our arms. As I have watched her assimilate into our family I now understand why I had that ‘gut feeling’ that she was supposed to be ours. She is filling needs in our family that I didn’t know a puppy could. I am not going to say she has been perfect – but she has been incredibly easy. Keep reading for answers to all the questions we got on our first day with this cute pup.

Questions About the First Day with our Chihuahua

What is her name?

Her name is Rosie-Cake-Love. Zoey wanted to call her Cake-Love. Kris and I wanted Rosie… We kind of thought Cake-Love would wear off, but anytime we call her ‘Rosie’ Zoey corrects us. So Rosie-Cake-Love it is!!

What kind of dog is she?

She is a long hair chihuahua! Basically a chihuahua, but extra fluffy.

Is she good with the kids?

So far she has been amazing with the kids. From the first day she began to immediately bond with each of us. She loves to lick Zander’s toes, which he thinks is hilarious. She also loves chasing Zoey around the house and riding in her backpack. Right now she is teething, which means she likes to nip at fingers. Zander thinks that is funny, but Zoey hates it. We are working on training her not to nip…

How old is she?

She is exactly 3 months today! Her birthday is Oct. 15th, so we now have 3 October babies in our home.

How big is she? How big will she get?

She was 2.5lbs on the first day we brought her home, and she will probably be 5lbs when she is full grown. Tiny!!

Why did you get a dog when you have two kids already?

Yes, someone actually asked me this. We didn’t think having kids meant we couldn’t have a dog too. Zoey has been wanting a dog since before she could talk… She would stare out the window at our neighbors dog, play with them and cry when she had to say goodbye to them. She always asks us for a dog. We have looked in the past, but it never felt right. When we met Rosie-Cake-Love we weren’t planning to adopt a dog, but we felt like she was supposed to be part of our family. We couldn’t say goodbye.

How are you potty training her? Is it hard?

I have potty trained an actual human child… and so potty training Rosie-Cake feels like child’s play. SO easy! Even the first day of potty training was not difficult. We were crate training at first, so we bring her out every hour or two and tell her to go potty. She gets a treat when she does, and if we weren’t playing with her she would always be in her crate. Now she knows to go outside and doesn’t have to stay in her crate. I read it would take 6-8 weeks to potty train a chihuahua, but she stopped having accidents after about 4 days of training.

What is the most mischievous thing she has done?

She is teething and tries to chew on everything! Mostly when we say NO firmly she stops chewing, but she has this spot on the carpet that she just keeps going back to!!

Is she hypoallergenic?

Although she does not shed, some people may still have allergies to chihuahua’s. I guess it would depend on the person! Luckily there are no animal allergies over here.

Where did you get her?

We got her from our local pet store, she originally came from a couple in Kansas who are both vets and breed Chihuahua’s.

What do you feed her?

I haven’t quite figured this out yet. We got a puppy kit when we adopted her that came with food. But I can tell she doesn’t love it. I am on the lookout for a better brand and definitely open to suggestions!

What is her personality and temperament like?

When we first brought her home she was timid and only wanted to cuddle, she slept a lot and was very quiet. I sensed that she had been starved for attention and didn’t quite know that she was safe and had a family now. Within a couple days she warmed up and now we see her very energetic and playful side. At least once a day she will spend 10-15 minutes running back and forth SO fast it shocks me! She loves to play fetch and tug of war. She still LOVES to cuddle luckily and she is very quiet.

I think those are all the questions I have been asked… If you have any that I missed just leave them in the comments!

  1. Rachael, i heard on CBC one day that when you look at a dog with love in your eyes his endorphins increase 25%. When you dog looks back at you with love in his eyes your endorphins increase 85%. “His” equals “His or Hers”

    1. Awwww that is so sweet! I think it is true. Based on the reaction of our puppy though when we play with her I would think the opposite was true haha. She always is SOOO excited to see us when we leave and come back.
