Kris and I have lived in four different apartments since we got married almost four years ago and coming up in May we will be moving again! I absolutely love moving to new places, but settling into a new home is difficult for me. I always set up the basics right away – couches, kitchen table and beds. It is hard for me to jump in and do all the accessories when we are moving again soon, though. On a limited budget it is hard for me to justify things that aren’t necessities. I just made a discovery that has made it possible for me to redecorate my whole house and get the cute, quality look I want without breaking the bank.

I just found out that Big Lots carries all the furniture, accent pieces and decor accessories you could ever need at extremely affordable costs. I was so excited to realize this that I decided to revamp my whole living room with Big Lots. As I said earlier, my home has a very basic look, black leather couches and neutral accents. I wanted to bring a little flare and holiday color into my living room and really make it pop for this fall. I got some inspiration from Big Lots Facebook page and their Pinterest page and then headed out to do some shopping.

When I went into the store my goal was to find some neutral cream pieces and a few red and bronze accents to bring in the fall theme. When decorating for seasons I like to stick mostly to pieces that will carry through all seasons and just a few really seasonal items. The employees were really helpful, they helped me find just the fall colors I was looking for. I was also on a quest to get some bold wall art to create a stunning feature wall above the couch. It was not difficult because there was a large variety of artwork and picture frames. They had artwork for a lot of different colors and themes as well. I was sticking to my living room, but I loved their kitchen decor and will definitely be heading back for more. I chose a red clock as my main piece for the feature wall. I also got a few vintage frames to put family photos in and some stylish wall art. Styles and assortment vary by store, you might not find exactly what I found.

I needed a little more surface space in my living room to display our family photo albums and cute fall accents so I also decided to get a side table. I was blown away by how inexpensive it was. Usually I would have gone with a black or cream color, but at such a great value, I decided to go for a more seasonal red. Red perfectly transitions from fall to the christmas season as well which is great. I stuck mostly to festive colors rather than festive designs (pumpkins, etc.), that way they can be used year round if I don’t feel like changing my decor every season. I bought a few really festive, smaller and less expensive accents from Big Lots’ huge selection of fall decorations. If I had of known I could achieve an upscale look like this at such a great value by shopping at Big Lots, I would have redone my whole house a long time ago!

I came home from Big Lots with my car packed full of high quality decor and my heart full of happiness that it didn’t drain my dwindling student budget. I was so excited that I started decorating right away and wanted to share the results with you guys. I really only did three things to my living room but it really changed the appearance dramatically. First I created a feature wall, it was super easy to do with the frames and wall art I purchased. I will tell you step-by-step a little further down on how to achieve the look.

After the feature wall, I set up the darling side table and decked it out with fall themed accents and candles. I also covered our storage bench with fall accents and candles to tie it in with the theme. Decorative pillows and a faux fur throw added the third and finishing touch to my new living room. Our previous accent pillows were gray and dull, so it was definitely time for an update and a pop of color! If you are looking for more ideas of what you can get at Big Lots to revamp your home I suggest checking out their Twitter and Instagram pages.

To create your own feature wall, follow these four simple steps:

  1. Choose your theme. I went for a fall theme with bronze, cream and red accents.
  2. Gather together your pieces. You can literally use whatever you want but I like to choose 2-3 family photos, 1 clock or mirror as the main feature piece and 2-3 additional pieces of wall art.
  3. Don’t put it up on the wall yet! Find a large clear space, like your dining room table, and design your feature wall there first before putting it on your wall. Lay out all the pieces and rearrange them ‘till it looks perfect.
  4. Once you have created the look you want on your surface, transfer it to the wall!

Four easy steps and you have completely transformed your wall. If you can only choose to do one thing to update your room a feature wall would definitely be my first pick. It is inexpensive and totally changes the look of a room and makes it stand out.

I had so much fun redecorating with Big Lots and love that my living room looks so beautiful now. What room in your house are you dying to redecorate? Have you started pulling out fall decor yet?

  1. I love the tip about rearranging your gallery wall on the floor until you get it right and then hanging it on the wall. I’m way too dense to have come up with that on my own. 🙂 #client

  2. Love your ideas Rachel! I also love Big Lots. I try to stay out of there because I can spend too much but I definitely want to head back after seeing your great fall finds. Nice job making your apartment really cozy and stylish!!

    1. I am so glad to hear I am not the only Big Lots addict 😉 This was my first time shopping there for home decor and I was truly blown away by how inexpensive it all is!
