How To Write A Song

The science behind composition is so complex, yet music is something that can be created by anyone without any knowledge of the theory that makes it work. So how is it that an artist can instinctively create something so intrinsically complex? There are many different ways to be inspired, and what works for one person will not necessarily work for another. If you are an artist yourself it can be easy to get stuck in one way of writing. Learning new ways to write and be inspired can open up so many doors for your creativity.

That is why I reached out to a whole bunch of experts on the topic of songwriting and asked them one question: ‘How are you inspired to write music?’ Here are some of my favorite answers I received (click on the artists picture to connect with them and hear more of their music!).

Music is one of the most awe inspiring creations an artist can make. In a moment a singer opens his or her lips and a sound comes out that makes your heart stop or tears fall, makes you laugh or makes you smile, and then in a second it is gone. All that is left is silence and the memory of a series of vibrations that somehow managed to go beyond your eardrum and pierce your soul.

In a way music is the most spiritual of all the senses. An artist captures the essence of their deepest emotions within a series of sounds and then conveys those emotions to another person simply by recreating the sound. It is almost uncanny the power music has to make people feel something. And it all comes down to inspiration.

If you are an artist, how do you get your inspiration to write?
