We haven’t ever had the entire Burgess side of the family together since Kris and I got married so this will be a first and we want to look fabulous for the photos. We already have planned out what we all will wear and the location we will take them, but I wanted to go beyond that and plan hair, makeup, etc. Since I have already put a lot of thought into how I will get myself totally prepped for family photos this season I thought I would put together a little three step plan for those of you still searching for ideas!

I got everything for this tutorial from Costco, I seriously love shopping at Costco. Kris and I joke about how going to Costco is like our date night. We could both browse the isles for hours, Zoey loves the samples. After we finish shopping we always get hot dogs and pizza in the Costco cafeteria. Anyone else do Costco family date nights?Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael BurgessFamily Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess

Three ways to get ready for family photos:

  1. Care for your hair. I have noticed that consistently using a great shampoo and conditioner does wonders for my hair. I can always tell if I even go a few days without conditioner, my hair starts to dry out. I recently grabbed Pantene Advanced Care Shampoo and Conditioner from Costco because I have used Pantene in the past and love how soft and silky my hair feels after using it. I plan to use it daily over the next month to get my hair looking healthy and shiny and full of body for family photos. I love the natural glow it gives my hair. I have to buy it at Costco because it comes in an extra large bottle which saves me a shopping trip later on.Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess
  2. Brighten your smile. Family photos always involve smiling and I have noticed recently that my teeth could use some whitening so my second line of business was to grab some whitener to start sparkling my smile. I actually looked at a couple stores to find the exact whitener I was looking for and Costco was the only place I found Crest 3D White Strips Combo Pack. I have only used it a few times and I can already see the results. I confess I have done a little photoshop whitening in some of my past photos on my blog, but I did not do any whitening in these photos and look how great my teeth look! Using these strips is so simple. All you do is apply the strips and leave them for half hour. They are comfortable to wear. I suggest putting them on before you do your makeup so you can wear them while you get ready.Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess
  3. Plan an easy, stunning hairstyle ahead of time. I have been trying lots of different hairstyles and have finally settled on the perfect one for family photos. The morning of family photos is always a hectic rush to get everyone ready so I wanted a hairdo that required the least amount of time and gave the best results. This look takes me 10-15 minutes and uses NO product at all (other than the shampoo and conditioner I mentioned earlier). Follow these simple steps to get the same look in the same amount of time.
    1. After you jump out of the shower brush your hair out and then leave it while you do your makeup. This gives it a little time to air dry and cuts your blowdrying time in half.
    2. I always blow dry my bangs first, I pull them out to the side with one hand so my bangs are taut and then once my bangs are dry I flip my head over and blow dry the rest of my hair with it upside down, this gives your hair natural body.Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess
    3. Once your hair is dry divide it in half, one half over each shoulder.
    4. The reason this hair style is so quick is because of the way I curl, each half only takes four curls. Grab the front quarter chunk of hair on one side and place the iron in the middle of the strand, as you roll it up your hair gently slide the curler down the strand till it is gripping the ends. Hold it till you start to feel the heat come through.Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael BurgessFamily Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess
    5. Continue backwards until the first half is curled, remember to grab large chunks of hair, again I only do FOUR curls on each side. After that gently brush out the ends with your finger tips.Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess
    6. Repeat on the other side – and you are done! This is my go to hairstyle when I am in a rush. So easy and looks great.Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess

Those are just a few ways I have been getting ready for family photos this season. Since I got all dressed up for this tutorial I made Kris and Z get dressed up too. Then we ran out to the forest near our house and took some ‘practice’ family photos to get a feel of what they will look like at Christmas. We only had us three and a tripod so most of them don’t have everyone in the picture, but I loved how they turned out. Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael BurgessFamily Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael Burgess Family Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael BurgessFamily Photo Ideas with Fashion Blogger Rachael BurgessOh, I almost forgot to mention, while I was at Costco I saw this lotion I have never tried before, Olay® Regenerist Micro-sculpting Cream. After reading about it, it seems like a great thing to add to my daily routine to give my skin a healthy glow for family photos. Has anyone tried it yet?

Hopefully this post helps you get ready for your family photos this season. I can’t wait to take ours – mostly because it means my family will be here to visit and that is going to be so much fun! Hope you all have fun, fantastic plans for the season too. XOXOX

  1. Your family is darling. I love this easy curl idea. My hair is long and a bit wavy but I usually flat iron it. I think doing just a few curls would look nice. I need all these steps for our family pics! Coming up soon. #client

    1. Probably about six hours?! I think since it is a wavy look rather than tight curls it stays looking good for awhile.
