How To Accomplish Personal Goals & Be A GREAT Mom

I have had quite a lot of my friends and followers ask me how I make time for music, motherhood and blogging. The truth is – I don’t – at least not every day. But over the process of time, I have made each of these things an important part of my life. And while I am still learning daily how to find balance, set priorities and make progress, there are a few things I have learned along the way that have REALLY helped me accomplish my dreams while still being a full time, stay-at-home mom.

Today I thought I would share the process I go through to accomplish my goals and how I keep track of the various ongoing projects I have. There are five basics steps I follow to organize my life and make things happen. Basically it all comes down to one thing though – discipline. If you want to accomplish something you have to be willing to pay the price! I do have to follow that by saying it is important to remember that some things are out of our control. Life is unpredictable in many ways, so it is wise to be ok with the idea that things may not go exactly as planned. These steps will definitely help you get closer to your personal ideals in life though.

Step 1: Write Down Your Goals

This is SO key. I sometimes will go days feeling like I have so many things I want to get done, but every time I have a free second I can’t remember what those things are. Keeping up with kids can be a little brain frazzling sometimes. It can leave you with this feeling of being both overwhelmed and directionless at the same time. I find so much clarity when I take the time to write down my goals for the day, week, month and year.

Step 2: Create A Plan Of Action For Each Goal

Writing goals is almost pointless if you don’t create a plan. I always try and work backwards. For example figure out what you need to accomplish each month in order to achieve your goal, than break your monthly goal into weekly pieces, then break that down in to something you can do each day.

I used to get so excited about a goal, I would go full speed ahead at it for a few days or weeks, and then I would just feel burnt out and quit. I realized that if I actually limit myself to doing a reasonable amount each day I accomplish a lot more.

Step 3: Get Organized/Write Lists

This kind of relates to the one above. Once you have a plan for each goal write down a list of things you will do every day. My goals in vague form include building my blog and social media presence, finding new clients, being a good mom, learning new music, maturing spiritually and emotionally and keeping my house clean. So each day my list looks basically like this:

  • Task related to blog growth
  • Reach out to 1 potential client
  • Choose one area of the house to clean and organize
  • Take time for myself to read scriptures or inspirational messages and identify aspects of my life that I can improve
  • Spend a certain amount of time each day with Zoey doing a fun activity that is device free
  • Spend half hour learning new music

As you can see there is one task for each goal I have. Each thing on my list is small, but in the long run it makes a big difference. Baby steps!!

If you don’t accomplish everything on your list every day, don’t be too hard on yourself, it happens to me all the time. I just try and have a fresh start each day.

Step 4: Designate Time For You & Time For Your Family

It is important to set aside specific times for you and your dreams, passions, hobbies, etc. AND to set aside specific times for your kids. As a mom you are always on duty and your kids are top priority. So it might seem weird to have set times for them, BUT it is still important to designate specific times where family is your total focus. I find it really helpful to put away all devices during this time so you can really get the most out of family time.

It also is vital that you choose specific times that you can work on your goals. Choose a time that works best for you with your kids schedule – before they wake up, nap time and after they go to bed are my favorite times to accomplish my goals.

I organize my list from most difficult thing to the easiest thing. Then I schedule my day kind of like this:

Before the kids wake up: Accomplish the biggest/hardest thing on my list (this makes me feel like my day was successful no matter what!)

Morning and early afternoon: Spend time with the kids and cleaning up

Late afternoon: Nap time for the kids and time for me to finish the rest of my to-do list, if they wake up before I am finished this is the time of day I pull out Zoey’s iPad (educational apps, don’t worry…), crafts and cartoons so I can keep working.

Evening: Special time with Zoey doing something fun for her, make dinner, clean up, put the kids (and myself) TO BED!

Step 5: WORK REALLY HARD & MAKE YOURSELF UNCOMFORTABLE

Goals typically aren’t accomplished by accident. You have to work really hard. My mantra for life is this:

“Successful people do things when they don’t feel like it.”

Rarely do I want to start my day at 5AM. Sharing my videos, blog posts and pictures almost always makes me feel a little self conscious, stressed and nervous. Making meals feels like such a chore to me most days. I often force myself to do things I don’t feel like doing in the moment, because I know the results will be worth it.

Making your goals a priority and actually seeing success will always require work and sacrifice.

After following those five steps I think it is important to realize that as a mom you have to expect unpredictable things to happen. Don’t beat yourself up if you are unable to finish the things you had planned for the day because something family related came up. In the end the time you spend with family is the most important and at the end of the day you took care of a little human and gave them what they needed to live, and that is pretty amazing. YOU are amazing! So try to eliminate feelings of guilt or in adequacy. I often have days where all I can do is keep my kids fed, and I have learned to realize that that is totally ok!

What are your biggest dreams and aspirations? Do you make time for them every day? How?
