How To Monetize Your Blog & Why Bloggers Keep it Secret

People ask me allllll the time – ‘How do you make money blogging?’.  When I first started blogging I had this same question and it was like pulling teeth to find answers. I didn’t even know what to search for. The term ‘influencer agency’ was something I had never heard of and I thought sponsorships were only for super fancy famous people.

Fast forward five years, plus a ton of asking questions and searching for answers, and I have a pretty good hold on how to monetize a blog. Getting to this point was a long journey for me. Bloggers are very secretive about how to make monetize. Finding answers can be extremely difficult.

Blog Monetization is a Taboo Topic for 3 Reasons:

  1. It feels like bragging! Blogging is HARD work, but all people see is pretty pictures and fun vacations.
  2. Blogging is competitive. You are constantly competing for sponsorships, the attention of brands, followers, etc. Every one that you share information with is another person to compete with.
  3. Blog monetization is a super confusing topic! I could easily come up with twenty different income streams that contribute to my blog monetization – but there are definitely hundreds of ways to monetize out there.

Blogging is Hard Work

Is saying that you make money blogging, bragging?? I don’t think so. Blogging isn’t easy. The hustle is REAL people. Like stay-up-till-5am-working real. In my opinion, bloggers should be proud to say they can support their families, through something they created entirely from scratch.

The amount of will power, creativity, perseverance, tedious busy work, organization, planning – the disappointment, the tears, the love, the vulnerability…. UGH. Guys, if you could see behind the scenes, you wouldn’t see bloggers as bunch of people taking selfies with products for easy cash. You would see a pretty hard working, motivated bunch of people. I am super proud of the fact that I can support my family with my blog.

Blogging is Competitive, But I’m Not…

I am just really not competitive. Sure, I want to do my best, and it feels good when it works out. But competitivity (yup that is a word, don’t question me) just isn’t my thing. Sharing is caring. If anyone wants to make money blogging, I am happy to share the deets on how to do that. No secrets here. I just think it is the nice thing to do.

BUT…. (and this is a pretty big but).

Blogging Keeps you BUSY

I have NO free time. Like I said, monetization is a confusing topic, there are so many aspects of it. As much as I want to share everything I have learned in my five years of blogging, I just don’t have the time. Plain and simple guys. Time is not my friend these days. I am happy to answer very specific questions – but to hand hold through the whole process is extremely difficult for me to do.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing your tips and firstly you’re absolutely right, it is SO much hard work as so much TLC goes into your work.

It’s great when you see your hard work paying off. I think it’s a great idea to sign up to influencer agencies, just like a recruitment agency would do to help you in your quest for work, or a model agency representing you, it’s simply just great to have an agency helping you out.

Thanks for sharing! Really do love your blog.

  2. I love the attitude ‘sharing is caring’. I think so many people come from a perspective that it is a ‘dog eat dog’ world and for some people that is their world, but I have not found that to be true. I have found that every time I have shared, or cared, I have had others share and care right back at me, and way more than I ever shared.

  3. It may have been fairly hush-hush when you started, but it’s much different now! I’m trying to start a blog to make money from home and I have been able to find a ton of information from other bloggers about how they make money from their blog, from series just like yours. A lot of bloggers even post an income report every month about how their blog has performed financially. There are also mini-courses available from some bloggers on the subject, that could even help an experienced blogger. I look forward to reading your series! I think it will be super helpful.

    1. It definitely has changed over the last few years and I love that, but I still run into this attitude more often than not when I am searching for more information… I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Send me a link when you have your blog up so I can check it out!!
