How To Get Your Baby Sleeping Through The Night – Detailed Month By Month Schedule

A few weeks ago I shared a few tips on how to help your baby sleep through the night in this post. Today I am going into even more detail about the schedule I use from day one to get my babies sleeping through the night as soon as (healthily) possible. This post is for all the moms out there wondering how to get your baby sleeping through the night. Below I will share a detailed sleep schedule starting at day one, going all the way up to 24 months. This schedule got both my babies sleeping through the night between 6-8 weeks old!

Our Sleep Journey

For the first few weeks with Zoey our schedule was all over the place. I fed her whenever and let her sleep whenever and felt exhausted constantly. I called it ‘child directed feeding’, because giving it a name made it feel like I was actually doing something. In reality I was doing nothing. I was always ‘playing it by ear’ and never knew what was coming next. Feeling like I was just barely surviving was my new normal. I am sure many new moms know the feeling! It was a mess. I finally was at my wits end and so exhausted. I decided to buckle down and start a sleep schedule.

At 2-3 weeks I started following a sleep schedule (which I will share at the end of this post) that someone had recommended to me from the book Baby Wise. Within two days I saw drastic improvements. Within a week she was fully adjusted to the new schedule and followed it almost perfectly. As I was consistent with her schedule during the day she started sleeping longer and longer at night. Zander has been exactly the same way. I started this schedule with him from day one. He is seven weeks old now and consistently sleeps for a 6-7 hour stretch every night (longer than suggested on the schedule below, but he is healthy and has gained lots of weight, so oversleeping is no longer a concern)!

Now we get to the actual schedule. So here is how it works – you are always following a basic pattern: SLEEP, PLAY, EAT. All day long you will want to follow that pattern at 2.5 to 3 hour intervals. The hardest part of the schedule is not allowing your child to sleep longer than three hours from the beginning of your last feeding during the day. Creating a healthy sleep/eat pattern during the day helps establish good sleeping patterns at night.

I’m sure I am not the only mom who is a WAY BETTER MOM when I am well rested. Not to mention my kids are happier when they sleep well too. That is why I wanted to share this schedule with the hope it helps some other momma’s out there sleep at night. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer, I am no expert, but have a little bit of experience and a few more tips and tricks up my sleeve. Happy sleeping!!

**Disclaimer** I don’t have any type of degree in sleep, child care or health, this information is based off of my personal experience and may not be the best choice for every mom and babe. Don’t implement anything new with your baby without using a good combination of common sense, following your gut and advice from professionals and people you know and trust. NEVER implement a strict sleep schedule if your baby is not nursing/eating well or gaining weight!!

Have you ever tried sleep scheduling? Did it work for you and your babies? Any other tips for moms struggling to sleep? I would love to hear what you guys think in the comments below!
