I Have A Confession | 5 Fool Proof Steps To Accomplish Your Goals

5 Fool Proof Steps To Accomplish Your Goals And New Years Resolutions by Rachael BurgessI have a confession, I never exercise. Maybe once a month, twice if I am lucky. Never enough though. I suffer from weak joints since pregnancy that I know I could strengthen with gentle exercise. I also get tired a lot. It is a real struggle some days to chase Zoey up and down the stairs and outside around the block. It is embarrassing for me to admit, but I am not in shape. I want that to change. I recently discovered a process that helps you accomplish your goals almost without fail, so today I am committing to apply that process to exercise.

A couple years ago I realized that I never keep my long list of New Years resolutions. I knew I needed to do something different so I came up with a method that helps you accomplish your goals much more effectively. With this method I have accomplished things I never thought possible. For example, I always wanted to do something with music, but it wasn’t till I applied this strategy that I actually felt successful. Within a year of pursuing music while following the process I will outline below I had 40K followers on my Instagram music page. To me this was HUGE.

I have used this approach for a lot of other goals and have found a lot of success, so this year I plan to apply it to my desire to be more active. That is why for the first time ever I bought myself a gym membership! YAY ME! I also bought myself a whole new wardrobe for the gym, because there is nothing more motivating than new workout clothes, right?!

I have been doing a mix of cardio and core workouts and also some racquetball practice. My husband plays racquetball with his buddies, so I thought it would be fun to get to his level so we could play together. I had no idea what a workout it would be and how much fun I would have! The yoga pants I got are designed to compress, which is fabulous for me since I have weaker hip and knee joints. They provide firmer support while I bounce around chasing the racquetball all over the room… Since it is winter I also bought a couple active sweaters. I don’t think I will be running outdoors a lot, but these will be great for when I am running errands after the gym and don’t have time to change.

How To Accomplish Your Goals & New Years Resolutions For Real

Now for those of you who want to join me in my goal making and/or getting in shape, here is the secret method to success. It is simple: choose ONLY ONE goal at a time, then follow these 5 steps. I have found this method to be almost fool proof for accomplishing goals.

1. Identify a goal (eg. get in shape)

2. Mentally set this goal as your top priority. Forget about your other goals for the time being.

3. Break it down into bite size pieces. (eg. sign up for a gym membership, buy new workout clothes, take advantage of the one free training session most gyms offer… etc.)

4. Be accountable to yourself every single day. Did you accomplish at least one thing that helps you on the path to your goal today?

5. Once you have achieved your milestone, pat yourself on the back and choose something else to work on.

Depending on the size of the goal this process could take two weeks or six months. Whatever it is I feel so much better about myself when I am able to totally slam dunk one goal, then when I have twenty resolutions half-baked. I would love some friends on my fitness journey so feel free to leave your exercise goals in the comments and we can both keep each other on track. Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  5. I have a confession haha I spent $250 at Old Navy this week because of your blog. My husband even shopped a little. I got my second package today and… another from Gap and Old Navy last week. Then… we saw that the sale was still going on last night and we bought moreeee. Ok and I didn’t even check out their work out stuff. So after work I’m going to get back on haha. That’s so cool they have cute work out stuff now. I didn’t know. Also, I need to start working out. Thanks for the honest post!

    1. Haha that is so awesome! I spend that much almost every time I go in (which is way too often). Wish we lived closer so we could be gym buddies. And honestly I was a little nervous to post it, because I hate admitting how awful I am at fitness, but I thought if I made it public I might be more accountable to myself! lol. Crossing my fingers.
