Layering Kids Up For Snow | Stay Warm For Hours

Layering kids up to stay warm in the snow.

Zoey and me LOVE playing in the snow, but if you don’t plan properly snow quickly soaks through thin layers and play time is over. I have had a very difficult time finding boots that hold up to snow for longer periods of time (for Zoey) and even though I know these winter coats are built for the cold, I am not sure they were built for the amount of snow throwing and rolling and playing Zoey does.

Like I said we love playing in the snow, so I have mastered the art of layering my kid up so that she can play in the snow for hours and still be warm and toasty! I have it down to a science basically, not to brag 😉 You have to do it in a way that keeps your kid warm, but doesn’t turn them into a marshmallow that can’t move their arms or legs because they are soooo bulky.

There are basically four layers and one bonus layer that I bet you haven’t used or seen before.

Layer 0

Granny panties and socks obviously 😉 😉

Layer 1

Thick cotton tights and a fitted tank top or tee (even for boys I would use a pair of tights).

Bonus Layer

Put ziploc baggies over your kids feet and zip them up around their ankles. The plastic traps in heat like nobodies business and keep feet warm even when water soaks through boots. When I was a kid I lived on a small island on the West Coast of Canada – we rarely got snow, so we didn’t often buy great winter boots. When it would snow unexpectedly I discovered that rather than wearing sneakers that would soak through really fast I could tie grocery bags around my feet over my socks and just wear that, no shoes. Yes I looked like a hobo. And my mom probably didn’t know I was doing this LOL, but it worked like a charm. Obviously never leave a young child unattended with plastic bags! I always dress and undress Zoey since she is only two and make sure I throw the baggies away as soon as I take them off.

Layer 2

Another pair of thick cotton tights and a long sleeve shirt. The second pair of tights hold the plastic bags in place (you can see them bulging a little below her knees!). They also add another layer of heat without the bulk. Like I said before, I would use tights for the under layers of boys or girls.

Layer 3

Knit sweater and jeans.

Layer 4

Snow gear! Snow pantsboots, water proof gloves, beanie and finally the warm winter jacket.
