Who else is getting ready to take holiday family photos?! If you haven’t planned them already, now is the time. It is already December… Which is just crazy, time has been flying by since Zander was born. I wish I could press pause and enjoy my favorite month just a little bit longer. Anyways, with family photos on the horizon I thought I would share a makeup tutorial with you guys for how to make sure your makeup looks fabulous in photos.

I can’t tell you how many times I have spent so much time and thought on my makeup, only to realize it was completely washed out in the photos. Or even worse, it stood out in all the wrong ways, too glossy/reflective, to red, etc. Since starting my Instagram page and blog I have kind of learned the ups and downs of applying makeup so it looks flawless in photos and this is my go-to routine. You don’t need to buy any specific makeup for this tutorial, you can use everything you have in your bag, the only thing I do recommend buying is a long lasting lipstick. Lips are the easiest thing to ruin in a picture because in the rush of getting ready in the morning lipstick often wears off. I use Neutrogena® MoistureSmooth Color Sticks because they are really long lasting, easy to apply and reapply, thanks to the unique packaging design, moisturizing and they are a great price.

Step 1: Clean Slate

Start with a completely clean slate by washing your face. If you want your makeup to really pop in photos you have to start completely fresh and do your makeup right. I use Neutrogena® Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes because they wash off even the most stubborn makeup, I use waterproof mascara most days and they even remove that! They are also meant for sensitive areas of skin like around the eyes. You can find them at Walmart.

Step 2: Extra Foundation

Apply your foundation all over your face, making sure to blend it down your neck. There is nothing worse than foundation lines showing up in photos! I put a little extra on when I am getting ready for photos because it gives my face a clean, almost naturally airbrushed look. Pay attention to problem spots, if you have a zit put a dab of foundation on it and leave it for a few minutes before blending it in. This allows the foundation to harden a little and become thicker, giving extra coverage to your problem areas.

Step 3: Sharper Contour

Apply contour under your cheek bones, to the bridge of your forehead and sides of your nose. Blend less than you normally would because contouring doesn’t show up well in photos. It may look a little too drastic in real life, but it will slim your face and look much more natural in photos.

Step 4: Gentle With The Blush

Things tend to appear more red and rosy in photos. Go gentle on the blush.

Step 5: Make It Matte

Add a matte powder over your entire face once you are done with the last four steps. There is nothing worse than that reflective, shiny look that sometimes shows up in photos when you have too much glossy foundation on!

Step 6: Shimmery Shadow

Choose a statement shadow that stands out more than your everyday eye shadow. I love shimmery shadows for winter family photos. They feel so festive!

Step 7: Liquid Liner

Liquid liner stands out much better than a pencil liner! It is also longer lasting and smudges less. I always go for liquid liner in photos if I have a choice.

Step 8: Fake Eyelashes or Double Mascara

If I have time I like to quickly put on some falsies for photos. I don’t love how fake lashes look in real life, but in pictures they make your eyes pop. They go a long way to giving your makeup the wow factor in your photos. If you don’t have time for them a simple trick is to apply mascara once, allow it to dry completely, then apply a second layer.

Step 9: Fill Eyebrows

I have dark eyebrows and I still do this! I don’t know what it is about photos that magically make your eyebrows disappear. If you don’t have an eyebrow filling pencil you can use a brown eyeshadow and the smallest makeup brush you have in your set to gently fill in your brows.

Step 10: Long Lasting Lips

Put on a lipstick that will last. Like I said at the beginning of this post, I use Neutrogena® MoistureSmooth Color Stick because they last longer than most lipsticks I have tried. I have been using this brand for a long time and have almost every shade you can imagine (there are 16 shades total). In this post I am using Plum Perfect because I thought it had a holiday photo vibe. I like to use the lipstick itself as a liner and then fill it in after to make sure I have a perfect lip line in my photos. Bonus aspect of the Neutrogena® MoistureSmooth Color Stick is that they are ultra moisturizing. They are made with shea butter and are the perfect lipstick for dry winter lips. You will notice softer lips after just three days of using this lipstick. You can find these at Walmart.

  1. I’m def going to try the lipstick! I love doing classic red lips, but haven’t lately due to the very dry winter and the lip sticks I have are not moisturizing enough. I love the tips!

  2. You look great with or without make up but this is a great tutorial. Now if I could just look this great with all your tips…hum maybe if you could do one on how to hide wrinkles😉
