The Sacrifices I’ve Made

Becoming and being a mother is difficult. From the private heartache of trying to conceive, to the woes of never ending morning sickness and the excruciating pain of giving birth. From sleepless nights, to trying tantrums and the feeling of loss when Zoey asks me a hard life question. I kiss, comfort, cuddle, carry and keep safe. I often forego food, social events, sleep and self care. Being a mother means making sacrifices, and giving up a part of yourself.

Examples too personal to share publicly come to mind when I think of the sacrifices I have made to become a mother. And I am positive I am not the only mom who could say that. But ya know, I would do it all again in a heartbeat for those little people. I can’t look at their little faces too long, or I tear up. There are no words to describe the unconditional love I’ve grown as I’ve become a mother. All the battles that brought me here are so beautiful to me now. The struggle has been real, but the prize is priceless.

Just because motherhood is worth it all doesn’t mean I don’t sometimes wish things were different. Stretch marks, dark shadows under my eyes, hair damage. These are a few of my (least) favorite things. They are the less flattering aspects of motherhood. Honestly, with how hard we mama’s work, don’t we deserve perfect skin, radiant faces and luscious hair?! Oh, and a good nights sleep?! I think so.

As a mother I feel so strong, like I can do anything. I am fearless when I am a mother – and I deserve to look as fearless as I feel. Eliminating stretch marks might not be possible, but I do have some idea’s for obtaining healthy hair after all the hair damage pregnancy can cause. Pregnancy is known to cause hair loss and breakage. I experienced this when I was pregnant with both my babies. My hair has never been the same as it was before Zoey and Zander came along. So when I was invited to share the Moroccanoil #FearlessBeauty campaign, I immediately said yes. Their message, that whatever makes you happy shouldn’t damage your hair, is 100% how I feel about motherhood. I should be able to be a mom, and have the hair I love.

Moroccanoil products are designed to promote healthy hair no matter what your profession or personal hobbies are. I love the examples of the four women who they have highlighted in the fearless beauty campaign: a skateboarder (who lives in my favorite town in the world…. so jealous!), a gorgeous model, an inspiring fitness trainer and an underwater photographer (her art is incredible!). Each of these women are pursuing their passion. Each of them use Moroccanoil products for vibrantly beautiful hair, despite the hair damage their professions cause.

I have been using Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner. It is specifically designed to help repair hair damage from chemical processing or heat styling, which are both things my hair is exposed to often. This shampoo and conditioner also helped with the post baby hair damage I have. It is infused with Argan Oil, which is soooo amazing for your hair. The other thing I have loved using is the Mending Infusion, which you can order here (and I would definitely do that ASAP). I have really bad split ends, and this is a vitamin-fueled, quinoa protein-packed formula that nourishes broken, frizzy and split hair.

At the beginning of this post I talked about the hard parts of motherhood. But being a mom is mostly made up of indescribably beautiful moments. The first time you hold that little person. First steps. First words. Hearing another human call you ‘mama’. Tiny arms wrapped around your neck and squeezing tight, while a little voice whispers, “You’re my best friend mommy…”. Seeing their smile at 6am and realizing there is nothing you’d rather wake up to. Watching them grow and become incredible people.

As a mom you give unconditional love, and you also receive it. Your babies need you, and they don’t care if you have no makeup on, if you haven’t showered, or if you are cranky and tired, they want you. It is amazing to feel needed and irreplaceable to someone. In my life’s experience there is nothing more beautiful than being a mom. I love products that help me look as beautiful and fearless as motherhood makes me feel.

  1. Love your hair, my hair falls out like crazy after a baby. I’ve never tried Morrocan Oil- I am totally going to try it. Thanks for the tips. BTW the best part of the blog was the first part

    Loved it, thank you!

  2. I AM FEARLESS WHEN I RESPOND TO CRYBABY, PUBLICITY EGO-CENTRIC BEINGS WHO HAVE ONLY EXPERIENCED WHAT EVERY MOTHER HAS GONE THROUGH WITHOUT COMPLAINING TO THE WORLD…ONLY TO USE HER FORUM FOR PUBLICALLY ADVERTISING PRODUCTS FOR WHICH I AM SURE SHE WAS WELL REIMBURSED. HOW ABOUT HELPING OUT ALL THE SINGLE MOTHERS, THE UNWED MOTHERS, THE MOTHERS WHO HAVE BEEN PREGNANT..SUFFERED THROUGH ALL THESE TERRIBLE COMPLAINTS OF YOURS ONLY TO LOSE THEIR UNBORN CHILD.WHO ALSO USES THIS COMPLAINT TO POST SEVERAL SEMI-NAKED PICTURES OF HER “DESTROYED BODY”..YOU SICKEN ME….THANK GOD THERE IS AN UNSUBSCRIBE BUTTON

    1. Wow, it sounds like you’re really feeling frustrated. I’m just wondering why you bothered to subscribe in the first place since Rachael always shares wisdom, inspiration, and tips of things that she reviews- I am not at all offended by that and I’ve had plenty (7) of babies 🙂

Also, I can’t imagine that blogging about her life takes away from her ability or desire to help single, unwed, or pregnant mothers. I’m curious as to what led you to think that she doesn’t do those things?

    2. Hey Ronald,
      no vagina=no opinion on motherhood

also, instead of worrying about what you think she should be doing, worry about yourself and how you could be uplifting others and helping others…. unlike your tear-down comment which is quite hypocritical

  3. I’m constantly impressed with how well you articulate thoughts and feelings that we all have but don’t know how to express.

  4. You are totally right!!! A mom does deserve to look fabulous after all we do to take care of those little ones!!!!! Thank you for your positive out look on life. It is refreshing to see someone who is realistic and positive about motherhood.
