Moving Regrets

My one regret moving to Erie is that we didn’t move closer to the beach. I still remember the first time we drove through Erie (post here) and I was absolutely blown away by Presque Isle. We are about 20 minutes from the closest beach. That is just not close enough. I want to walk off my back porch and have my feet land in the sand.

That is the thing that is hard about moving every two years. You never really know a place until you get there. Even visiting is never quite enough. With only two years in every city, you never get a chance to find your perfect home. And now we are looking at possibly leaving Erie in under a year, and it breaks my heart we never got a chance to live right on the Lake Erie shore. There is a possibility we could stay in Erie, but everything is up in the air right now. The only thing we know for sure is that we will be leaving our current apartment when our lease is up.

I tell all my friends that they are the main reason I don’t want to leave Erie. But I lie. It is the beach. I just don’t want to leave it yet.

(Just kidding ladies! I love you all more than a lake. Or, maybe not kidding? I don’t know. I have lived in places with no friends, and I have lived in places with no beach. Not having a beach is pretty much as bad as not having friends.)

The fun thing about being married to your best friend and creating your own mini best friends is, no matter where you go in the world, you have a little crew of your favorite people. You are never alone when you are surrounded by a loving family. On any given day, there is no one I’d rather spend time with than Kris, and we get to have a sleepover party every single night. Living far from friends and family is much easier when you have an amazing little family of your own.

But you can’t marry the ocean. You can’t marry the sand, or the sunshine, and force them to follow you to the ends of the earth. Why though? I feel like it would just make sense to have an ocean randomly show up wherever I decide to live. I deserve that. Right?

My mother is to blame. She blessed me with a love of the sea. Or is it a curse? Because the thought of living somewhere without a beach nearby is so disheartening. Erie has filled that ocean shaped hole in my heart. Leaving this beautiful place is not something I am ready to do.

We don’t find out whether or not we get to stay in Erie till MARCH. And we haven’t even decided if we will submit Erie as our top choice (location wise it is my top choice, but we have to consider a lot of other aspects with medical school). Edit: Erie IS our top choice, crossing our fingers. So until then I am going to try and get my beach fill. And of course I am going to start planning my next ocean vacation ASAP. I am thinking sometime in November when it starts to get cold around here. Probably Florida again, but if you have a better idea, let me know! I am all about discovering new, beautiful (budget friendly) beaches.

  1. Stay here in Erie. Everyone else is gonna miss you & you’re awesome blogs! & Don’t forget your hubby and kids!

  2. Dear Rachael,

May I suggest Ocean City, Maryland! The old-fashioned boardwalk makes the ocean even better. Also there are beautiful sand sculptures! The whole scene is kid-friendly.
