As many of you know I have been to The Voice auditions in New York City TWICE. I went to open call (last summer) and then this summer I received an invitation to The Voice callback auditions. You can read my post all about the callbacks here.

We live about 5-6 hour drive away from New York, which isn’t bad, but with a babe in tow it definitely isn’t a day trip. So both times we stayed a couple nights and explored the city. I may not have made it on the show but we were not going to let the precious time and money we spent getting there go to waste!

Last time we were in the city we went and saw the Statue of Liberty via. the Staten Is. ferry (for free!!) and we also went to an amazing museum of native art (also free!). We drove around the city a bit as well so we could see Wall Street, the LDS Temple, and the Twin Towers site. That was probably the most memorable place we stopped. There is something so chilling about walking around that site and peering into the holes where foundations used to be. Now they are the most stunning waterfalls that look as if they go into the earth forever. Crazy to think tomorrow it will have been 14 years since 9/11. I still remember that day, the only day in my childhood that we turned on the TV. We could watch movies but my parents never let us watch cable.

This time when we went we stayed right in the city and took the subway everywhere… Let me tell you there is nothing quite like the New York subway. There were a few times it was literally SO packed that we couldn’t fit on. Most the time we got on we were squished body to body with a bunch of strangers who were just as hot and sweaty as we were. There is AC on the subway but while you are waiting for it to come you are just melting away in this stinky underground tunnel. It made me feel like a local though in a way. That is definitely the way we will travel next time we go. So much quicker and more convenient than looking for parking.

The first thing we did was go to Time Square where my audition was. I won’t go into detail about my audition because I made a video all about it here. After my audition we shopped around Time Square and went out to eat and then made our way to the Rockefeller Center. That was so cool to see. We went to the top and the view was breathtaking. Our last stop was the High Line. The High Line is an old train track that was raised above the city and has now been transformed into a walking path. It was a peaceful and beautiful escape from the hectic-ness of Time Square and The Rock.

All in all our trip would have been one thousand times better if I actually made it on to The Voice through the callback auditions, but it was still amazing despite that disappointment and I hope to go back again soon! Maybe even next year to audition….. 😉
