Opening Day at the Zoo

The title of this post is a lie, because this is actually the day after the zoo opened officially for the year. BUT I had no idea it opened until this day. As soon as I found out, we were there. We are get-out-of-the-house-and-do-things type people, despite the snow. Apparently not all the animals felt the same. There were a lot of animals that were hiding inside.

The thing I want to remember most about this day is this: After an entire winter of not being to the zoo, the animal Zoey was most excited to see, was a statue of a dog. She LOVED this dog last summer, and she remembered it when we came back. She calls it “her dog” and pets it, hugs it, kisses it and even tries to sit on it. When we leave she always is sad and dramatic about it, and says lots of goodbyes and I love you’s.

The other thing I liked about this day is that we got to spend the whole entire day with Kris. This is the same day we went to the Batman Lego movie. He actually hasn’t been too busy lately, which I LOVE. But he was busy last month, so this day felt extra special. That is the thing about not having enough time with someone, you learn to appreciate them more.

I went to hospital days recently, which was sponsored by Kris’ school. While there I had a conversation with an older gentleman. After talking for a bit he said to me, “Well, I know how it is, having a family in medical school can be hard!” I immediately agreed with him and said something about how busy it was. He said, “But you know, that is what makes your marriage so strong. You are taking this whole journey together, the hard times will bring you so much closer. Nothing can break that bond.” It was an unexpected nugget of wisdom from a stranger, and I appreciated it so much. I really have learned to take advantage of every moment. I love to making big memories, out of small moments.

This day probably sounds relatively unimportant. But it is one I want to remember.
