What to do with old baby blankets!

Since the moment Zoey was born she has been so attached to anything soft and fuzzy! I am sure she is not the only baby with this obsession… She is two and a half and any time she gets a new fuzzy blanket she gently strokes it against her cheek and then looks at me and says so seriously, “It SO soft mama….”. Fuzzy blankets wear out fast with Zoey, she sleeps with seven of them currently and counts each one as we lay it over top of her at night. Because of this they get dirty fast and are washed often.

I’ve known it was time to cut back on her blankets for awhile, but when I started using Snuggle® Ultra Blue Sparkle fabric conditioner and blue iris bliss® Snuggle Scent Boosters® I noticed her blankets started staying softer and more cuddly a lot longer! This was the motivation I needed to begin the clean out process. I bought Zoey a couple new blankets that I expect to stay cuddly and soft for a long time, and decided it was time to get rid of the old ones.

Zoey is so attached to each blanket – and lets be honest – so am I, she has had a lot of them since birth. So I came up with a plan to make sure it wasn’t too difficult to part with them. I decided to sew a small quilt using a square from each of her most loved blankets. If you are overloaded with baby blankets use the tutorial below to create a little keepsake that takes up a lot less space and leaves your child with something special.

HOW TO: Make a Simple Memorable Quilt

  1. Gather up your old baby blankets that you want to get rid of.
  2. Cut a 6x6in square out of each, I did a four square quilt because I wanted it to be really small, but you could do more if you want.
  3. Lay the squares out and arrange them how you want the quilt to look. What to do with old baby blankets! What to do with old baby blankets! What to do with old baby blankets!
  4. Fold two squares face to face and sew along the seam. Do the same with the other two squares and then sew both halves together, make sure all the hems are on the back side of the quilt.
  5. Cut a square 18x18in to use as the back of the quilt and lay the four squares on top, fold the sides over like you see in the picture below and pin them in place. What to do with old baby blankets! What to do with old baby blankets!
  6. Finally, sew along the outer edge of the border all the way around the quilt, and along the inner edge of the border all the way around the quilt! What to do with old baby blankets!
  7. Use Snuggle® Ultra Blue Sparkle fabric conditioner and blue iris bliss® Snuggle Scent Boosters® to keep your new new blanket soft and snuggly. Pick both of these products up at your local Sam’s Club (check the March Instant Savings Book at Sam’s Club for a special deal on both of them!). Follow the instructions on the package for use and do not put more than the suggested amount in the wash. For the conditioner and scent booster to be most effective don’t overpack your load of laundry. What to do with old baby blankets!

Zoey is loving her new quilt! I thought she would be sad when she saw the blankets being cut up, so I tried to do it during a nap, but she woke up and actually was really excited to watch the process. She even helped (a little bit) along the way.

I love how much fresher her new blankets stay using this new laundry conditioner, it makes me wish I had tried it sooner! I don’t have to wash as often and we get to spend more snuggle time together. Using Snuggle® Ultra Blue Sparkle fabric conditioner and blue iris bliss® Snuggle Scent Boosters® together equals less time spent doing laundry and more time together as a family, nothing to complain about, right?

I was seriously expecting the blanket transformation to be traumatic and tragic for Zoey, but she is so over the moon with her new treasure. Check out this link for more fun tips on how to keep your laundry clean, fresh, soft and snuggly!

  1. I must say, as considerably as I enjoyed reading what you had to say, I couldnt help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a good grasp to the topic matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from additional than one angle. Or maybe you shouldnt generalise so significantly. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just heading for a gut reaction to the subject. Think about adjusting your own believed process and giving others who may read this the benefit of the doubt.

  2. This is such a sweet post! Your little one is a real cutie, we have three little ones, and live in Valley Forge area while my husband is a full time student as well! I just found your blog and I’m a new fan 🙂 Hope we win the Kalahari contest! yay!

  3. What a wonderful idea- I am going to share this tutorial with my sister for my nephew! I bet those blankets feel even snugglier than ever with the Snuggle infusion and the extra touch of love your quilt adds! #client
