How to update your living room for spring with lifestyle blogger Rachael Burgess.

I have been wanting to redo our living room for the past few months and I finally got around to doing it. I got the most stunning lamp from Lamps Plus and it gave me the push I needed to update our decor. I always try and update for new seasons, since spring is just around the corner it felt like the perfect time. Updating your living rooms style is a lot more simple than you might think. In this post I am going to tell you how to update your home in three easy steps.

To start, below are a few pictures of what my living room looked like before the update. Our couches were in great need of updating, but new couches are not a part of this tutorial. You can easily work around the large ticket furniture items and focus on accent pieces that compliment those for an entire new look at a relatively low budget.

As you can see, before I had a warmer, winter theme going on in my living room. You can see pictures of that full update here. I wanted to really brighten thing up and make the room more light and airy to welcome in spring and the fresh weather it brings. Below are the after pictures of my living room, take a peek and then at the end I will let you in on three easy steps to achieve a similar look (there will also be an awesome giveaway at the end so keep scrolling!).

  1. Step One: Choose a theme color. You can choose whatever color you want. I would recommend one or two neutral colors and one more vibrant one to add a pop of color. I chose to go with white, silver and a light, fresh, sea-foam blue. This choice was inspired by the bubble lamp in between the couches. The light bulbs on this Possini Glass Lilypad lamp instantly made me think of sea-glass, which I thought would go perfectly with an ocean color vibe.
  2. Step Two: Choose a feature piece to focus your theme around. For me the new feature piece was the Posinni lamp. I would recommend using a little bit more of your budget on this item since it will be the focal point of your room, then you can spend a little less on the smaller accessories. A lamp is the perfect feature piece in a room because not only can it look fantastic, it will also add a lot of light to the room. I loved the lamp I chose, but I had such a hard time deciding since Lamps Plus has so many great options. If you need some inspiration check out this page for some of my favorite lamps. I especially liked this one and this one.
  3. Step Three: Choose out your accessories and set up the room! Make sure they fit in with the vibe of your feature piece and current furniture as well as your theme colors. I would go with a few accent pillows, a rug, a small lamp for your accent tables, wall art and a few accessories. You can find everything you need to refresh your room at Lamps Plus, I loved everything so much so I quickly made up a little inspiration board to get you started (see it here).

As promised I am doing a giveaway as well! 1. I would choose the Possini Euro Design Double Tier Brushed Nickel Floor Lamp as I need one of these in my living room. In addition, this would match my decor.

  2. Our living room had wallpaper one three of the four walls from the day we moved in. It was dark cream background with brown and rust design, and after we overloaded the walls with decorations, it was just too, TOO much. We recently took out the ancient, worn carpeting and replaced it with bamboo flooring. That wallpaper is also a thing of the past (back in the ’80’s, when it was put up, I’m guessing). We went with a basic tan on three of the walls, with a green accent wall. It’s been a year and I’ve been looking for the perfect art for the room. I’m almost afraid of putting up even one item, because in our house, clutter is like gas and will expand to fill any space. However, the walls are still completely bare – and boring. My sister has a beautiful piece of metal art in her house and it has me wanting something metal, too. While this item is more than the prize would cover, it would be perfect for the wall opposite our bay window. I really love the Metallic Leaves Metal 52″ Wide Wall Art. I wanted something botanic-themed, since I’m also going to be adding some throw pillows with leaf patterns, and the area rug I have has the same.

  3. Your room looks terrific! We just got done redoing the dining room except the light looks all wrong now but this one would be perfect Possini Euro Design Concentric Shades 25″ Wide Pendant Light thanks for showing us your room!

  4. I’ve got several fixtures that need replacing – basement, kids rooms, master bath. Looks like there are some beautiful choices that could go in those rooms!

  5. The update is fun and I’ve never thought of refreshing for seasons, sounds fun. I think I would look for a piece to go in out dark corner to brighten it up. The lamp you found I’d awesome!

  6. I have always wanted to redo our bedroom but seeing how certain individual items can come together cohesively to bring a room together has never been my forte. Great job on your room though and thanks for introducing me to lamps plus!I think I binge searched that site for over an hour. It may take me a while to get a whole room some but I think I would love to start with wall lamps. we have night stand lamps that work great but are constantly being knocked over by my monkey climbing children:) I loved the Kenroy Home Amherst Bronze Plug-In Swing Arm Wall Lights:) I would definitely get two of those! They fit our style and are classy enough that I could pair them with most room decor without completely botching the room.

  7. I love your blog! Your style is beautiful, can you come over… 😉
My windows are all tinted so I’m always on the look out for great lighting, thanks!

  8. I love the decor you chose! I would use the $150 gift card towards a new pendant light for my kitchen. I’ve been dying to get rid of the PINK light left by the previous owners.

  9. I’d love to get a small chandelier for my bedroom like the Possini Euro Metairie 20″W Silver Fabric Crystal Chandelier.

  10. How fun! I absolutely LOVE your inspiration board! So adorable! I would love the Possini Euro Design Double Drum 18″ Wide White Ceiling Light – right now in my office we have a low hanging chandelier that looks so out of place! This would be a dream to win! Crossing my fingers!! XO

  11. I have been eyeing quite a few, I *think* my fav is the Uttermost Monroe Downbridge Arc Floor Lamp! It would look great in my home office or living room.

  12. I love that website! So many cool choices! My favorite one’s were the Aline Crystal table lamps. Some of their sconces are pretty tempting too! Beautiful job on your living room!

  13. I would love a new floor lamp to replace the one we had to throw out because it was infested with cockroahes! Boo!

  14. I would love new decorative pillows for my living room. I am not sure which ones I would choose but there were some awesome orange ones in the multicolor section that caught my eye. But they are dangerous because I would definitely have to rethink some of my other decorations to make them work.

  15. Love the change in your room! It’s so bright and beautiful. You have great style. I would use the giftcard for a new entryway fixture. The current one is hideous and makes me cringe evertime I walk through the door

  16. I would get one of the pretty mini chandeliers for my dining area. We have an ugly black spot like looking thing.

  17. Love this! It’s hard to decide but I think I would pick table lamps for our new house! I can’t wait to decorate it!!

  18. Your living room looks great. What I like the most on that site would be Rust Adjustable Pole Pharmacy Metal Floor Lamp.
It would be great to put by my bed which I need a little more light to do all of my work and college school work.

  19. I am in desperate need of some bedside lamps for 2 bedrooms! Loving the teardrop shapes, maybe in Mercury glass?

  20. I saw your post on LDW, I like your clean and fresh style! Your european lamp is so eye catching it really adds to the room, I myself would live to have a floor lamp to brighten things up in our apt. LV room, though I would like to add a hardware style look for a texture variety.

    1. Do you mean an industrial type look? I love that and was so torn between the lamp I got and a more rustic industrial one…

  21. Love your new lamp and the use of those metal boxes as a lamp stand! Our apartment needs a refresh also! If I won I would get one of Lamps Plus’ bar carts to complete our “bar area.”

  22. I think I would use it for our hopefully soon to be nursery. I’m thinking soft muted decor, chandelier. Very classic. 🙂 You did a great job with your living room!

  23. I love the blue chair and #16 lamp on your inspiration board! We’re looking for a rental, so I’m by sure what will suit the space. Gorgeous makeover!

    1. Good luck with the rental hunt! We are in the process of doing that right now too… It is so confusing trying to find the right one.

  24. I would buy a hanging ceiling lamp. Our living room is dark and I would love more lighting in the center of the room. Wonderful pictures!

  25. Great seasonal update! If I won I would have to go with the 30-inch ceiling version of your lamp for my kitchen. I’ve been looking for something to replace some drab track lighting since we moved in and I think that would be perfect.

    1. Awesome choice! My lamp is SO bright too so I am sure it would really light up your space if you got it. Good luck!

  26. This is awesome – I love the colors. I’m torn, because my living area has no overhead lighting.. so there are a couple that would really change things. But at the same time my dining room light hangs so low and my husband hits his head every night clearing the table (you’d think he’d learn!) And one of the close to ceiling lights would fit in so much better! We’re still newish to this house, and have a lot of work to do

    1. Ha we have the EXACT same problem with our living room… no overhead lighting, and our dining room light used to hang super low and my hubby would hit his head too. Luckily it was raisable! Good luck in the contest, sounds like you need this one 😉

  27. Love your redesigned room! Those couches are amazing. I would love to get a new chandelier for our master bedroom redo that we’re working on (something industrial style)! They have SO many, I can’t even narrow it down to one that I like. Any of the caged wire/edison bulb designs!

  28. Living room looks great. Love the shades of color you chose. If I won’t the giveaway, I’d use it to increase our storage space.

  29. great ideas i love neutral earthy colors too..i recently moved to another state with nothing but my clothes so i would use the giveaway to start fresh

  30. The sofa and the lamp are pure perfection, I love how you decorated the room! It looks like it came out of a magazine!
I would love an office chair and something like the Reindeer Head that you posted on the inspiration board ♥ Keep up the great work!

    1. Cool! I would love to see how it turns out when its done, so I can feel jealous of the fact that you actually have a spare room! Guests have to bunk up in my two year olds pink princess room currently 😉

  31. I love how you redid the living room! That lamp is really unique and I’ve never seen anything like it before. I check out the site and your board and I think I would use the gift card on a desk lamp. At the moment I share an apartment with my best friend and I want to redo my room. I’ve been looking for signature pieces and trying to adhere to a color scheme as well. I think a really cute desk lamp to spice up my desk/work area would be nice!
