Summer birthdays are the best… Kris’ birthday was last month, but I kept feeling like we didn’t celebrate it properly and I wanted a redo. We had cake and dinner and a gift, but for our last four years of marriage we have always been with my crazy family for his birthday and they always make it into such a big deal. I felt like without all the family around it didn’t quite have enough oomph, so we went for round two. This time I actually went out shopping and got a bunch of decorations and treats. Even though it was still just the three of us we went to the park and I set up a whole party table and we ate and laughed by the lake and had such a great time.

I tried to make it extra special by secretly learning a song on the guitar that I could sing to Kris. The guitar is something I have been wanting to learn for a LONG time, but every time I pick it up I end up putting it back down right away. Kris knows this so I thought it would really surprise him if I learned something and it did, so that was fun! I sang him I’m Yours by Jason Mraz which has always been one of my favorite songs and it turns out it uses the four easiest guitar chords to learn. So basically it is one of the easiest songs you can learn on guitar, but I was still proud of myself!

Decorating For Summer Birthdays

The decorations were so easy. I got a roll of American Greetings wrapping paper and some packing tape and taped one end of the roll of wrapping paper to the underside of the picnic table, then I rolled it over the table like a table cloth and taped it securely to the other side. I also fastened a few little pieces along the length of the table to make sure it was securely in place.

We are on a tight medical school budget, especially with having planned in our upcoming Hawaii vacation, so we didn’t do lots of gifts. Zoey and I each chose out a special card though from Walmart. I thought the cycle of pants card was hilarious😂 and so true. The inside said ‘you can only go up from here.’ Zoey chose a sparkly purple and pink one that talked about what a special part of our life the birthday is. I love the mixture of humor and tenderness you can share with just a card.

We were going to go to water world after the rides, but we ended up staying too long at the lake and it was closed by the time we left… Hoping we will make it there this weekend instead if it doesn’t rain on us. That is one of the best things about summer birthdays, so many options for fun outdoor activities.
