Leave Me Alone For A Year Or So

Last week the weather looked something like this:

I LOVE the snow! I never had it growing up and it feels like a novelty still. So gorgeous… But this weekend it was 70 degrees and sunny! It felt like it was June in February. And it made me realize something. THE SUN MAKES ME HAPPY.

The snow is beautiful. The rain is beautiful. But the sun makes you happy. This weekend I felt more motivated to accomplish things on my to do list. I felt extra energy, excitement and its-good-to-be-alive type feelings. So I started wondering if this was all in my head, or if there was a scientific reason blue skies and sun makes you happy. I have heard lots of people say that there is, but I have never looked it up myself. I was shocked at how many reasons there are that sun makes you happy and also HEALTHY!

Here were my 10 favorite reasons the sun makes you happy and healthy:

1. The sun actually increases serotonin! Which is the body’s natural happy hormone!

2. The sun can help you loose weight – serotonin suppresses appetite, so you are likely to eat less in warm weather.

3. Sun can reduce acne, eczema and other skin conditions. I read somewhere that 30 minutes of sun to affected areas before you put on sunscreen can really help – just make sure never to burn.

4. Sun exposure can help regulate your period – so I guess this list is 10 reasons the sun helps girls, but only 9 for guys 😉

5. The sun boosts fertility by reducing melatonin, melatonin decreases fertility.

6. The sun also boosts your energy by decreasing melatonin.

7. The warmth from the sun can help reduce muscle aches and pains!

8. Although over sun exposure can increase the risk of skin cancer, a good amount of sun can minimize your risk of other types of cancer.

9. The sun is the best treatment for SAD – Seasonal Affective Disorder – a condition which causes depression or ‘the winter blues’.

10. Sunshine strengthens your immune system by increasing your supply of white blood cells – I guess thats why people tend to get sicker in the winter!

And so, winter, I just wanted to say, while it was very nice to have you for awhile – please go away now. And don’t come back for a year or so. That will give me time to miss you again. Right now I just need some SUN!!
