Three Winter Outfits in One, Mastering the art of Layering with Rachael Burgess

Three Winter Outfits in One

Winter is almost here and it is time to start stocking up for the cold months ahead. The key to a stylish winter wardrobe is learning to master the art of layering. Each layer has to fit seamlessly with the ones before, the goal is to make each essential accessory look fashionable rather than frumpy. You want to look better with every layer. I love layered outfits that look good no matter what piece of the puzzle you remove. If you can create outfits like this you can get at least three looks in one, but the possibilities really are endless when you start building combinations using all your winter wear. Keep scrolling and I will show you three fantastic looks in one perfectly layered winter outfit.

Dress | Beanie | Booties

I am starting with the basics here, but it is already a complete look with only three items. Even when it is snowing there are days that are warmer than most. Have you ever walked out into the snow all bundled up only to realize you are sweating five minutes later? I have! For moments like this it is essential that your outfit does not look incomplete when you layer down. I absolutely love this versatile plaid cocoon dress and the way my beanie makes the yellow in the dress pop. Pair it with the perfect pair of booties from Old Navy and you are set to go. Now for layer two.

Peacoat (on sale) | Purse

On cooler days there is nothing like a nude colored peacoat to make almost any outfit look better. I have seen SO many coats this color this season, but my favorite style is the peacoat. It looks great buttoned up or down, either way you wear it it shows off whatever top or dress you are wearing underneath. Many coats need a scarf to add dimension, but with a peacoat the scarf is optional since the layers shown underneath add interest and color to an otherwise simple coat. When I bought this coat last week it was $60 and now it is on sale for only $25!! I’m sure this won’t last forever – so seriously – grab it well it’s hot people.

Flannel Blanket Scarf

My final finishing touch is the stunning wrap scarf. I have already raved about this beauty in a few posts (here & here). I have never owned a scarf that I have loved so much in my life. The length makes it easy to wear several different ways, and the width makes it possible to use as a wrap. You can even copy-cat the stylish poncho look this season with this scarf if you want to. A scarf adds so much dimension to an outfit and it really adds a cozy feel to your overall look. Once you add the scarf, the hat becomes even more vital because it adds a pop of color that is lacking once your top is hidden. I absolutely love the technicolor selection of scarves, hats and gloves at Old Navy this season. You can add interest to any outfit with brightly colored accessories from the winter collection this year.

So there you have it, three way to wear one winter outfit, plus some fun layering techniques. I hope you are all having as much fun as I am getting ready for this beautiful winter season ahead of us. I would love to hear any awesome layering tips you guys have in the comments to give me ideas for future posts. xoxox

    1. Wow I love your shop! Thanks for the kind words and feel free to shoot me an email if you are interested in collaborating 🙂 xoxo

  2. I love the simplicity but it looks so elegant at the same time. I agree with Lorraine that the model makes the clothes.

  3. Is this dress easy to move around in? I need something warm that I can add layers over and underneath for work, but I need to be able to run in it and play with 7 year olds all day.

    1. I am not exaggerating when I say I wear this dress almost daily! It is super comfy, flexible, easy to chase kids in. Although when I try and take the stairs my usual two at a time it is a little to small for that. I got this one too and it is a little more flexible, I think it would be perfect for you: http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=495081047&pid=uid944-31035788-89&pid=uid944-31035788-89 (I wore it in my Wildest Dreams music video if you saw that).

  4. Wow!! I would never have guessed that that dress could be so gorgeous on!! You make me want to go shopping every day at Old Navy

  5. Amazing Dress and cute model too 🙂 Can’t wait to check out Old Navy and their cute winter clothes this year, thanks for the heads up!
