Christmas time… This is the time of year Zoey and I have been impatiently waiting for since December 26th, 2015. Last year was Zoey’s third Christmas, but it was the first one that she really could understand, enjoy and remember. I have to say as a mom Christmas is WAY better. I used to think there was nothing better than waking up to stuffed stocking and a living room full of gifts, but it is so much more fun to watch the joy in your kids face as they experience Christmas morning in complete awe and excitement! Really it is indescribable.
When Kris and I were first married we didn’t have many holiday traditions, but having kids has made traditions a lot more important. We decorate for holidays earlier and plan more festive activities. One tradition that we love doing at Christmas time is hot cocoa bars. And this year is extra awesome because we have a new addition to our traditional hot cocoa bar. Tim Tams!
Tim Tams are a chocolaty biscuit, best enjoyed with a hot beverage (hot cocoa is my preference!) I tried them first as a teenager while living in Vanuatu, a small group of islands near Australia. Up until recently I thought these treats were not available in the states, I was over the moon when I discovered them at Target!! It has been eight years since I had them last.
Some friends of mine from Australia brought them to Vanuatu and introduced them to me and my family for the first time. They also taught us the ‘Tim Tam Slam’, which according to them was the best and only way to eat Tim Tams. Basically you bite off two corners of the biscuit diagonal from each other. Then you dip the Tim Tam into your hot chocolate and suck the hot liquid through the cookie like a straw. The last step (the messiest one) is when you quickly stuff the whole biscuit in your mouth before it dissolves completely… Just like in the pictures below. Basically it is a melty, magical, mess.
Hot cocoa bars with a plate of Tim Tams has been a frequent thing in our family as of late. It is also perfect for entertaining friends.
How To Create A Unique Holiday Hot Cocoa Bar
What you need:
- Tim Tams (four flavors are available at Target: Original Chocolate Crème, Caramel, Dark Chocolate and Dark Mint)
- Cocoa Mix
- Candy Canes
- Mini Marshmallows
- Mugs
- Three different sized jars
- Optional: Chalkboard stickers (also found these at Target) & chalk
How To:
- Label three jars with the chalkboard stickers and chalk as marshmallows, hot cocoa and stir sticks.
- Place the mini marshmallows, candy canes and hot cocoa mix each in separate jars.
- Arrange Tim Tams on a plate! I like to get at least two flavors so guests have some options.
- Arrange everything on the table including the mugs.
- Boil water or milk according to hot cocoa directions when guests arrive.
- ENJOY!
What are your favorite holiday traditions? Has anyone else tried Tim Tams before? Anyone else as excited as I was to find them stateside?? I look forward to reading your comments.
