Before we moved to Erie Kris did the first two years of medical school in Greensburg. He was on a learning path called Problem Based Learning. Basically it is a program that allowed him to do medical school from home, he only had to be on campus for a couple hours a day. LECOM is the only medical school in the states that offers a program like this. I feel like it is a great option for students with a family, he still had a ton of time for marriage and medical school back then. It was perfect for Kris because he is very organized and self motivated. A self study program was just what he needed. It was perfect for me because I got to see him a lot.
He still had to study ALL THE TIME. But at any point in the day I could peek into his office/closet and say hi and get a little time for our marriage. Once we moved to Erie it felt like the more typical medical school experience really started. Kris is working at a great hospital and loves his rotations. Which makes me happy, but we get to see him a lot less. Which equals a lot less time to focus on our marriage and his relationship with the kiddies.
I am not actually trying to complain. Kris is AMAZING. Sometimes I wonder how I ended up with the best guy on the planet. Medical school is SO hard and he never complains. He always is trying to spend more time with me and Zoey and Zander, while still being successful in his program. He is working so hard to be able to provide for our family. I just love and appreciate him so much.
Like I said though, we don’t get to see him near as much as we used to. And that is hard. Zoey cries whenever she has to say goodbye to Kris, which is just heartbreaking to us. And Zander doesn’t get nearly the same amount of attention from Kris as Zoey did when she was born. Some days I feel like I saw Kris more on a daily basis when I was 16 than I do now!
It is ok though. We chose this life and knew the sacrifices we would have to make. For us it is a price worth paying for the end result. My dad did the same thing when I was about the same age as Zoey. My mom always told us medical school was hard on marriage and my dad still wishes he could have spent a little more time with us kids during those years. But it is something us kids don’t even remember. I love the life my parents gave me, and hope Kris and I can do the same for our kids. It takes more effort to make our marriage a priority. But it has brought us closer than when we just took our time together for granted. Right now is the tougher part, but we still are loving life and enjoying all the beauty these years have to offer.
Kris finishes studying earlier on Saturdays so he can hang out with us and we always try and get out of the house and do something as a family then. He takes Sundays off from studying completely, which is my favorite thing ever. So weekends are kind of our oasis in the dessert of no family time. I live for the weekends!!
