How to Reclaim Family Time & Reduce Technology

My favorite way to reduce technology and make family memories is family hiking time! The days have been really hot lately, so we like to get out for family walks in the late afternoon when it starts to cool down a bit. Hiking and walking as a family is one of our favorite activities, even during the winter. We always try to round the kids up at least once a week to get out in nature for a few hours in the winter, and several times a week in the summer.

Growing up this was a family tradition of mine! My family didn’t really play any sports. Hand eye coordination is not genetically a strong point for us… BUT we got exercise through our family hiking adventures. My mom was always looking up new trails to the beach or up nearby mountains, finding new views and places to play and picnic. It is something I am so glad she did with us as kids! It helped us create memories in a beautiful environment, while also staying in shape physically.

With the way technology has progressed since I was a kid, I think it is especially important to take time to disconnect and get outside. Between tablets, TV, smart phones and laptops, there is too much technology in our daily lives. I think it is so vital to leave that all behind and really be with your family. Hiking is a great way to do that!

Hiking with kids isn’t always easy. They go at their own pace, and tend to get cranky if we aren’t well packed with snacks and drinks. To make the exploring easier we always wear our favorite adidas sneakers. They keep our feet comfy. They have been a favorite brand of mine for years, and for good reason. adidas sneakers are always high quality, and they stand up well to the test of busy toddlers and kids. I also love how cute and stylish they are. Sometimes it is hard to find a sneaker that is both functional and fashionable, but not with adidas. I absolutely love these three pairs I just got for me and the kids, they all match, and what is more fun than mommy and me styling it with the whole crew?!

Zoey and Zander absolutely love walks in the forest. They are constantly finding little unexpected treasures in rocks, pinecones, leaves and sticks. Their adidas sneakers have been awesome through the dirt, over the roots and sometimes even into puddles we encounter in the forest. We always come home with a new collection of nature pieces that Zoey insists she will “keep forever”. It is so sweet to see Zoey and Zander bonding over their shared love of nature. Last time we went hiking they found a patch of ground covered in tiny pinecones. They kept picking them up, squealing in delight, and showing each other. Each one was like an exciting new prize, even though they all basically looked identical! Simple moments like this are so precious.

  1. Yes! That is how it was for me growing up, I was always outside. I cringe when my kids choose electronics over free play. But it is something we are constantly learning to navigate and will get better and better at I think. Thanks for stopping by and reading!

  2. I love this Rachel! Thank you for sharing. I have been a mom a long time (28 years). I had my oldest in 1990 and my youngest in 2014. I have seen so many changes. One that makes me sad a bit is technology. My older children preferred outside play over anything. My youngest can operate an iPhone better than us. Lol. Thank you for this post.

  3. What a fun read. One of our favorite activities when your mom was young was going to the beach each Saturday morning for a ‘beach breakfast’, which was often a little bit sandy and more charcoal-y than necessary for true deliciousness. What wonderful memories those hikes down to the shore, and hours spent gathering firewood, eating, playing and breathing fresh sea air made for all of us. I love that you two and your kids are continuing the tradition of enjoying nature together.
