Learning From Puddles

Today something happened, something that happens many times, every day. Zoey heard the train rumbling by, a block away from our house, at the station. She grabbed her boots and started tugging on my hand while pointing to the front door saying “go, go!” Today she even said the word train!

It is basically impossible to resist her pleading look so we got dressed and went out. The gleam she gets in her eye when she sees the train drive by makes it so worth it. When we got to the station the entrance to the platform was flooded, Zoey wasn’t wearing rubber boots so I carried her over the puddle.

As soon as I put her down she ran straight back to the puddle and began splashing and jumping and laughing, dipping her hands in the water and staring at her reflection while squealing in delight. It was then that it hit me. I could see in her eyes that she was completely and totally satisfied in that moment. So much happiness radiated from her because of a puddle. A PUDDLE.

When is it that we stop finding so much joy in the simple things in life? I think that as we grow society inundates us with the idea that more success and more stuff equals more happiness. Most times though, less really is MORE. When we are able to clear our minds and separate ourselves from the constant buzz of life, we can see with clarity the things that really matter.

Family. Art. Nature. God. Each breath. Puddles?

When we clear our minds from the rush, we find that the emptiness we are trying to fill, isn’t empty at all. The silence is where you discover the real things in life.

When you become a parent you feel a huge weight of responsibility to teach your child. It has taken me completely by surprise how often she teaches me.
