Thoughts About Moving to Florida

I know you guys are probably getting sick of hearing about Florida, but honestly I just can’t get enough. I am so sad I missed out on it for 25 years of my life! We are making up for lost time. Moving to Florida is something we have started consider for so many reasons… Anyways, we wanted to do something special this particular vacation day, other than go to the beach, so we decided a dolphin cruise sounded perfect.

While we were on our cruise we realized, surrounded by 20+ personal yachts watching the dolphins and people watching close by from the marina and docks, that we definitely didn’t need a cruise to see dolphins. They were EVERYWHERE! And they were very close to the docks too. We could have seen them even without a boat. The cruise was really fun though and did give us a closeup view. It also took us on a long tour around the bay by St. Petersburg. The tour guide showed us a bunch of multi-million dollar homes and told us about famous people who lived in them. My favorite home had a garage door on the back and a driveway that literally dropped straight off into the bay. No dock, no gradual incline to the water, nothing. I am sure it was meant for a dock, but it looked very strange.

I was surprised by how expensive the homes were. They were all waterfront, but not beachfront. The water in the bay looked pretty green and nobody was swimming in it. I just don’t understand the point of waterfront if you can’t have a beach or a place to swim! Can you even imagine spending 5 million on a home without beachfront? Just, why!? Honestly it would feel like the water was taunting me constantly and it would make me angry.

Moving to Florida is definitely something we have been considering. The beaches, weather and cheaper housing prices really draw me in. The thing that scares me to death is alligators. When we were wandering around Celebration we saw TWO just chilling in the water. And the first we only saw because someone pointed it out to us, it was camouflaged so well. At a different point in the day Zoey saw baby ducks by the waters edge and wanted to go see them. Being hyper paranoid about alligator attacks, I did not let her out of arms reach the whole day. Those ducks in the reeds looked like the perfect spot for an alligator to hide. I couldn’t help but think how easy it would be for a kid to wander to the edge of the water and get snapped up my an alligator.

Treasure Island would be a perfect spot for us to live. It has a small town feel, the whole thing is lined with beautiful beaches and since it is an island there are rarely ever alligators there. They can swim out if they really want to, but it is difficult and unlikely. It is also within an hour or two from Tampa and Orlando and all the fun attractions there, but far enough from the touristy buzz that it feels a little private. I guess being so close to the water puts you at a higher risk for hurricane damage though!

There are so many things to factor in when you are choosing were to live. In reality we don’t have much say in where we live for the next 4-5 years when Kris is done medical school and residency. It is fun to dream though!

Where would you live if you could live anywhere in the world?!

  1. That is really neat that you got to see so many dolphins. If you moved to FL I’d definitely come to visit!
