Stay Warm Without Being A Homebody This Winter

I will never forget my first real winter, running out to the car in some slip on shoes and a cardigan and suddenly realizing I was totally unprepared for winter and had no idea how to dress fashionably for the cold. When you grow up in a place where 1cm of snow is a reason to cancel school, you don’t really get to know what a real winter is like.

My mom always taught us to fear winter, it was pretty much hell according to her. I always heard nightmarish stories of how awful those freezing cold days were and how heavenly the west coast island life was in comparison. I have to say I do partially agree. The west coast is heavenly, BUT I can’t help loving winter. That white blanket of snow over the world makes our home feel so cozy. Plus it is so beautiful and fun to play in! Zoey of course is obsessed with the snow, which makes me love it even more. The cold can be so bitterly cold, but in the past four years I have upped my winter fashion game. I have learned how to dress for the weather so I can really enjoy stepping outside in the snow.

Layer Up

Staying warm and getting outdoors this winter is all about layers. I wear socks, over socks, over socks. Leggings under my jeans. Tank top, t-shirt, sweater, jacket, scarf. Of course a hat and a pair of gloves or two. Lastly some durable, waterproof winter boots. I learned my lesson wearing regular shoes after one trip out in the snow my first winter. I bought a cheap pair of cute boots the next day and with a little use I learned why those wouldn’t cut it either! The thin material didn’t keep out the cold and the snow wears your shoes out fast, after only a month or so I started to get holes in the heels. Me and my family LOVE to get outside, we live in a beautiful place with lots of trails, hikes and gorgeous scenery. Sites that are made more beautiful by the snow, I would hate to waste the winter away inside and not take advantage of this absolutely stunning time of year! This weekend Kris and I went to the lake, we walked along the trails in the trees. It had just barely started to snow so the beautiful trails were not only spotted with puddles, mud and a million leaves, but also little patches of white here and there, and we ended up on the sandy beach at the end of our walk. SO basically we encountered every type of terrain you could expect to out in nature on our walk. It made me extra happy I had decided to wear my Kamik boots!
